Waxing Away on the Tropical Highway–Mister Blue Sky

Hola Mi Blogflockers…….Mister Blue Sky is still on the Central American Tropical Highway but …… been so busy between chasing islands and beaches and surf breaks and small resorts and eco lodges in the Bocas del Toro area that there has been little hammock time and energy to blog on blog off ….. here’s waddup:

Mister Blue Sky rolled his hammock up over the mountains of Panama last Friday. He left the Bocas del Toro archipelago and the Caribbean Tropical Highway for the Pacific Tropicville Road. Presently staying at “Gone Fishing Panama’, a boutique resort in the Boca Chica area which is the staging grounds for some of the best fishing in the world. The three and a half hour bus ride (or should I say $9 roller coaster) to David (Daaveed) across the mountains takes you from the rainforest jungle with mountain water falls on every curve to the dry season on the Pacific side with cleared hillsides for agriculture and cattle. Size matters on the Tropical Highway of the Panamanian Pacific coast compared to the Bahamas and Caribbean. The fish are more diverse and overall bigger. In fact fish like Yellowfin Tuna get as big as a lot of the Blue Marlin that are caught in the Bahamas and Caribbean. Even the tides are bigger. Over in Bocas del Toro they have 18 inch tides. The Pacific coast in the Boca Chica area has 9-12 foot tides. Its comparing small Caymans to saltwater Crocodiles. But …… the Wahoo Are bigger in the Bahamas….Go Cat Island!

As I posted on the Facebook page Mister Blue Sky was invited by Mr “C” (Mark Charman) to visit his world class world famous fishing resort yesterday; The Panama Big Game Fishing Club, with resident monkeys swinging through the trees. He acquired it about two years ago and has completed significant renovations with new additions to be built in the near future . We’ve shared a few drinks the last few evenings. This is a first class fishing lodge-resort. His clientele fly in from all parts of the world. People with plenty of money but little time. So Mr “C’ has catered this fishing resort to the highest of standards. Check out their website or Facebook page or the pictures posted on my Facebook page. When Mr “C’ is done the Panama Big Game Fishing Club will be second to none (in the world).

Speaking of fishing lodges; I am staying at Bruce Edwards’ “Gone Fishing Panama” boutique resort. One of the first big game fishing lodges in the Boca Chica area after the formation of the original Panama Big Game Fishing Club. Now there are several in the area. I have already extended my stay here by another week because ….

BREAKING NEWS: Mister Blue Sky has been asked to mate for a few fishing trips …. I guess showing some pics of monster wahoo, lobster and Crab enabled me to pass the interviews … details to follow and hopefully some photos and videos …. here’s betting that if a Yellowfin Tuna is caught it will break Mister Blue Sky’s biggest ever …. hopefully there will also be Rooster-fish activity …

Mister Blue Sky actually rented a car at the David Airport after busing there from Bocas del Toro. Reserved through Expedia.com with Payless Car Rental. Arrived at Payless to find a note on the door saying out to lunch for an hour and half … waited the time and left without a car since the guy could not find my reservation and had no cars so …. walked 30 feet and rented one from Hertz; drove to Boca Chica and the Gone fishing Panama resort .. about an hour drive. I guess Payless means you pay less because they have no cars …

Gone Fishing Panama has a great set up with a beautiful view looking out from the open-air bar and restaurant. Mister Blue Sky was put in the “Monkey Room” not sure if there is any hidden meaning intended. It is a nice set up … in a separate building with two suites each with large private covered porches. There is a large infinity pool for Mister Blue Sky to perform his laps as well as a very large concrete pier running out to deeper water with a large ramp down to a floating dock … 8-12 foot tides here. Andrei is the chef and bartender when not cooking …. plus can be considered a security-body guard as well if such ever be necessary. He is originally from Moscow. I am told that there are about 3000 Russians now living in Panama. He speaks Spanish as well but very little English. I am getting better with hand signal communications … kind of like air guitar! oh ya … there is a hammock here near the infinity pool …. not sure if I have to wrestle the Iguanas to use it.

Mister Blue Sky has been on the tropical Pacific side of Panama for 5 days and has yet to be bitten by a bug .. no mosquitos … no no seeums … there are bugs here but not the biting type .. unless you count scorpions or tarantulas … the non biters is pretty amazing considering the last 5 evenings have been spent at Gone Fishing Panama’s open air bar area which means basically outdoors with a roof.

Mister Blue Sky really never blogged about the Bocas del Toro adventure and the essence of that area. Bocas Town on the island of Colon is the hub for all that is Bocas del Toro … Bocas Town is like a very seedy wild wild west Dodge City with a tropical flare. Its Key West without the heritage but then again not …. Some decent waterfront restaurants, decent waterfront party bars a la Utila style .. lots of tourists and lots of back packers hitting the hostels … Very good surfing with quality surf breaks scattered through out the various islands and a handful right on Colon. The scuba diving is …. well …. not worth going to Bocas just to dive .. its expensive and practically all the dives are not in the ocean but rather in about 45 feet of water on the inside of the ocean side islands … plus the dive boats are just pangas and not equipped to go out to the ocean. The fishing industry is about the same as the scuba diving …. hardly a quality boat to go into the ocean to fish and only a handful of guides to take one fishing. Someone is really missing the “boat” considering the large number of tourists flocking in by the hour. There are 10-12 boutique resorts or eco lodges scattered on the various islands making up Bocas del Toro. Plenty of hotels and hostels in Bocas Town. You can not operate without owning a boat unless you want to pay the fleet of panga tour guides to get you there and back … where ever there is …

Well need to stop the presses for tonight to get ready for the first time ever fishing endeavor in one of the best game fishing areas in the world … no guarantees .. its called fishing, not catching, for a reason …. plus as the infamous Walt the Arab used to say on his radio show from back in the day … “its better to be lucky than good” .. although someone once said and many since that .. “luck is when preparation meets opportunity” … but quoting from Mister Blue Sky’s tropical fishing wisdom … “he who waits longer catches longer fish” or more importantly .. ” a successful fishing trip is when you get back to the dock, everything else is just gravy” ….. looks like its time to count fat tunas jumping over the transom in order to fall asleep …

Well its official … the HAMMOCK is being coiled up to roll down the Tropical Highway …. Mister Blue Sky is finally leaving Utila and the Bay Islands of Honduras …… next, briefly in San Jose Costa Rica …… then Bocas del Toro Panama after 27 hours of travel ……… leaving this Saturday with the out-going tide catching the current to Bocas Town.Riding The Current To Bocas del Toro

That will make 6 weeks based on Utila ….. took 3 scuba diving courses and did a total of 35 dives  ….. took a 4 day diving boat trip to Guanaja … a day trip to West End Roatan …… plus a dive trip out to the Roatan Bank sea mounts which are not near Roatan ….. made 5 ship wreck dives all in 100ft plus depths, biggest wreck was over 300ft long ….. dove on 4 separate sea mounts ….. went to Water Cay 5 times …. spent a day handline fishing for Wahoo in a 32ft Dory (with diesel engine) that was literally carved out of a mahogany tree back in the day ….spent another day fishing for Tarpon and Snook in one of the lagoons ….. competed in 2 Beersbie Championships, one on WaterCay the other at Trudy’s by the Sea….. I also spent many hours swimming harbor laps or snorkeling along the coast …. last but not the least are the harbor booze cruises on Alton’s boat ……..
I did not cook one meal unless you count peanut butter and jelly toasted sandwiches ……… You can eat out for under $7 a day, 2-3 meals …….. an expensive meal on Utila is $10-$12 max ….. you would pay $25-$40 for the same meal back home …… quality steaks, pork or fresh fish ….. tuna-wahoo-snapper-mahi- kingfish-amberkack-barracuda and sometimes marlin is on the menu …… that would be a marlin caught out of a Dory on a handline ……. I learned that at RJ’s which is a barbecue place 30 seconds from where I stayed at Lazy Daze and only open 3 days a week ….. they give you a lot more food if you get take out ….. so I took out more than I ate in at the restaurant …. RJ’s is one of the best places to eat on Utila especially the fresh fish but its all good …… My other favorite place to dine is El Picante …. located on the waterfront on a second story covered terrace…Jean the owner/host/manager creates a great environment and has excellent mexican style food …… even better margaritas …… I also ate a lot of baleadas at either Kings or Donna Rosa’s……. stuffed tortillas with various goodies …… cost $30 -$50 Lemps which is like $1.50-$2.50 US ….. they spill over a full size plate …. meaning they are rather large …. the avocado-lobster is my favorite …… I had many an egg sandwich or omelet at the Snack Shack at Alton’s which is about 30 seconds away as well … Anna makes a great egg sandwich  …..
Well what has Mister Blue Sky been up to for the last week    D I V I N G and D R I N K I N G and _________ I actually went to West End Roatan last Monday on the Miss Trinity, thank you Julie and Mitch for the invite, along with Marlo-Clint-Ralph-Jo-Steve …. great times …… collectively we have Germans, Brits, Canadians and a token American ….after having lunch in West End and picking up one additional Canadian shipmate, Heather who flew in that morning, we dove a ship wreck sitting in about 100ft of water with a reef wall about 30 yards away …….I fed chum scraps to all kinds of snappers, blue runners and a dozen plus Black Grouper weighing 15 lb-45 lb’s  ….. I had to constantly gently push these groupers off of me as they preferred to cover me up and try to get to my chum pale …. plus we had a huge Moray Eel wrap around Marlo’s legs looking for a handout ……. then back on board we had a big sailfish put on a jumping show just off of the boat ….. I have also made 5 other dives during the last week with 2 more set for tomorrow morning …… I have to give a huge shout out to Alton’s Dive Center’s instructors and dive masters …..they invited me to their night dive (staff only)
on the Haliburton Wreck which also sits in about 100ft of water …… incredible experience …. it was also a lot of fun to see all of them have so much fun …..
Mister Blue Sky still needs to down a few shots at a couple of the bars here to earn their T-shirt before he leaves the island. I definitely want a Rehab shirt (or two) …Trust me I spent at least 10 hours of internet time trying to figure out the best way to get from Utila to Bocas del Toro Panama, Little Corn island Nicaragua, as well as try too stay a few days at West End Roatan (no luck everything booked) ….. I have to take 4 planes and stay one night in Costa Rica to get to Bocas del Toro …..all good though assuming it works ……
Hey all …. I hope you are enjoying The Hammock Philosopher’s blog …… I have met a lot of great people here on Utila and most of them have moved on to other parts of the world ….. I expect to meet a lot more in the coming weeks …. feel free to leave any comments or hook up on Facebook …….. lets follow the Tropicville Road and hopefully we will meet at some future intersection on this Tropical Highway ……… MAY THE SMILE OF THE COSMIC WHALE SHARK ALWAYS SHINE UPON YOU
Till Next Tide,
Mister Blue Sky

Guanaja Turtle Flips HolaGuanaja Turtle Flips Hola

After dieseling down the tropical highway with cutlass and canons away…we seized the island of Guanaja aboard the Pirate Ship “Miss Trinity” …….On our return Mister Blue Sky was released by Captain Wahoo Joe Jackson and his 3 German crew as reward for his daring rescue of the crew from certain death after we surfaced from a deep dive off the island of Roataan….lets just say that we surfaced over a quarter mile offshore of the 100 ft wall dive from where we were supposed to be……. with the current pushing us further out to sea in 1000 foot of water…..drifting further and further and further away for over 45 minutes…(you get the picture)….Mister Blue Sky ditched his scuba gear…….leaving his 3 diving buddies huddled on the surface singing “rum by ya ya”…..swimming a 1/2 mile back towards Roataan Island…..when El Capitan finally spotted yours truly stroking over the cobalt blue horizon of the Tropicville Road…….(from the opposite direction of where we should have been)…..TRUE STORY I KID YOU NOT…….fortunately swimming 4-5 miles a week in snorkeling gear for the last 3 months paid life saving dividends…..

No sooner upon our return to Utila I was granted my release by the piratical people of the Miss Trinity …..as fait would have it….I was then captured by 5 young Canadian pirate wannabees Justine—Stacey—Nils—Landon—Adam…..they had flocked south to reap themselves to the treasures of the Utilian tropical highway….somehow only armed with an Edmonton hockey stick they were able to seize the dock house at Lazy Daze……which was carelessly left unguarded in my absence…. They ruthlessly forced me to participate in something that sounds like……….“beers bee”…..its a beer swaggering form of torture much like beer ponging………that entails trying to knock off the opposing team’s beer can from the top of a pvc pole by means of a Canadian saucer drone which they call a “frisbee ey”……..Once I proved my merit we sailed upon the yellow panga down the Tropicville Road and boisterously entered the Water Cay 2013 Beersbeee Championship and of course…….Mister Blue Sky’s team hoof-kicked ass away the competition….resulting in a Utila Town celebration at the harbor front bar-Tranquila Bay for its 9th anniversary parteeey……all those years of throwing frisbees to Golden Retrievers came back to life……..muscle memory I guess…..of course Mister Blue Sky’s pre-toss dance ritual had the opponents completely befuddled-whimpering and crying out “no moray” …..they were thus unable to protect their ….GOOOOOAL…

Back to Guanaja….wow….the most beautiful tropical island I have ever seen…..tropical cay islands….beaches…..mountains….waterfalls…quaint fishing villages…..Turtles…Permit…Tarpon…and the biggest Moray Eel to ever slither down the tropical highway…….at least 8 ft long with a head the size of a baby cosmic whale shark….and teeth the size of a huge blonde goat…….it was hanging out under the dock at Bo’s on Michael’s Beach……..also while fishing we lost a monster wahoo…..that if caught may have given Mister Blue Sky 3 Hoo’s of over 100 lb’s in his life time……….(I still intend on heading to Guanaja when I finally leave Utila….whenever the Canadian beersbee team finishes their winter training on Utila)…………

By the way………Mister Blue Sky finally has taken hundreds of tourist pictures….not pics of tourists….just pics that a tourist would take…….plus videos…..some of which will soon be posted……..others burned to protect the non-innocent…..

I would have blogged earlier but the coconut telegraph ran low on coconut juice……so I am back at my earlier blogging booth with the 3 whale sharks smiling at me from across the street…….

Ok I need to wrap up this blog……hope you will enjoy the upcoming photos….I swear on a pirate’s rum bottle there will be a plethora of touristo pics soon coming……

May the cosmic whale shark (that no one has seen around here since before Captain Morgan became liquidic) always smile upon you and may Orion’s Belt guide you down the Tropicville Road……which reminds me….I have finally seen the SOUTHERN CROSS while anchored out on the Miss Trinity….under the billions and billions and billions of Carl Sagan stars………

Till Next Tide,

Mister Blue Sky      (still waiting to get in his hammock and wax philosophic)

Mister Blue Sky just came up for air after another 3 days of diving and discovered…OMG… its Thursday!……..Another diving milestone reached, I am now a certified Advance Open Water Diver thanks to Alton’s Dive Center…..will soon get certified for Nitrox and then going for a heavy weight certification-Advanced Rescue Diver which will really test my skills, endurance and cut in to my hammock time on Alton’s dock…….

“its hard to wax philosophic if there’s no time for the hammock”

Since my last (and 1st blog) of last Sunday, I have dove 5 times to achieve this status…. a night dive (that went way troppo adrift after the 2 Japanese students went awol into the dark of night…not sure I should tell this whole story…, a drift dive, a wreck dive, a bouyancy and underwater navigation skills dive and a phenom of a wall dive. I will hopefully post soon a pic of me standing at the wheelhouse rail of a ship sitting in 100ft of water (while not doing upside down margaritas)…..

A guy diving out of Alton’s had a tattoo that said “Eat Japs not Sharks”…….there are very few sharks here….in fact I have yet to see one…incredible! Japan is raping the fishery world.

Alright here is how my apartment at Lazy Daze is stocked……loaf of bread, box of cereal, a jar of extra crunchy peanut butter plus strawberry jelly, 3 cartons of orange juice, 4 bottles of rum and 2 6-packs of beer (left by my 2 Amsterdam buddies who were supposed to leave yesterday but…no they discovered they had an extra day….somehow you really lose track of time here) plus coffee and 5 gallons of drinking water. Here’s why I am so well stocked on food….IT IS REALLY CHEAP TO EAT OUT……the Honduran Lempura ($) is roughly a 20-1 US dollar (so I’m told)…..I treated my 2 dive course buddies, Tara and Ashley and our instructor Phil to dinner at RJ’s for dinner last night in celebration …1 marlin and 3 snapper overloaded plates of food plus drinks for $35 USA!!!!!!!!…I’m at Mermaids again writing this blog and my overstuffed plate for lunch was about $4 or $80 Lempura……

Captain Joe is Alton’s numero uno el capitan for their dive boats…….he gets me in trouble with Master Instructor Phil because Joe and I yak about fishing virtually every minute when I’m on the dive boat Miss Trinity….but I tactfully remind señor Phil that as Phil preaches “that when on d’ boat Joe is d’mon” so if Joe is talking to me then I have to listen…enough said….

This boat was carved, hacked, molded aka constructed out of a single huge…HUGE…Mahogany tree. They are called “Dory’s” and they cut through the seas like a catamaran even though they look like a gargantuan canoe…..Joe and his dad actually have a small fleet of fishing boats, including 2 very nice center consoles. The dory though is really all you need…..we caught 2 small tunas and trolled one live for awhile but no real action except of course right at the end, near dark, when a monster fish scared the living poo out of my live tuna forcing it to seek air time on the surface…….. (THAT I WAS HAND LINING PER SLOW TROLL) which created a huge ‘old man and the sea’ surface boil that made me think…WE NEED A BIGGER TREE……..I had a great time on the water with Joe…thanks a lot el capitan…especially the thrill ride on the back of your motor cycle weaving in-out-around-over-and on zero-one-and no wheels (just kidding un poco)….along the Utila harbor front to your boat dock…..

Let me say this about diving here on Utila….captain Joe took us yesterday morning to the north side for 2 different dive excursions…….best I have ever seen……visibilty could have been better but that is a result of it raining 6.8 days of my 8.4 days here…the coral hills, ledges, walls et al are phenomenal and there is the most excellent wild life of all sizes shapes creeds religions races plus pseudo delectia for the viewing pleasure…..by the way the main grocery store sells…..tadaaaaaaa….”Nassau Royale”!….RumRakers for everyone!!!

“Be Happy-Don’t Get Bent” is the name of the new Socal/reggae song I’m working on…..and I am still trying to come up with lyrics and chords for the album title song “Descending Into Narcosis on a Sinking Hammock” ……. guess what….the highest land point on Utila is “Pumpkin Hill” but I can’t find anyone here that knows why its called such….so the story I am spreading is….. that is where the young Utila men used to take their ‘pumpkin’ girlies on a cosmic blanket ride under Orion’s Belt…….(plus it gave the elevated advantage to see if her daddy was coming)……

Let me give a shout out to Kevin and Michael, my party drinking flashpackers from Amsterdam, nice try in keeping up with me….lol.. thanks for looking out for Mister Blue Sky as we rolled the hammock across Utila Town’s tropical highway…keep in touch guys! One day you will reach the “poshpackersorous level” that I have achieved…..

Also…..muchas gracious to my British and Canadian diving buddies Tara and Ashley who have been with me throughout the various dive training….thank you for being my buddy and also for including me in the Utila night life scene…..its been fun, educational, entertaining and I also appreciate you two looking after me on the late (and early) night Utilian alcoholic trail…hopefully you have met at least one American that you like…..

Hey Phil…my instructor…your last name is Smith…guess somewhere in the genealogical cosmos we are related…….scary huh….thanks again for always letting me come back to the surface, especially head first…….just remember a successful trip means you reached the dock, everything else was just dessert!

Hey Alton’s Diver Center…thanks for the great courses, diving, instructors, boats, dock, hammocks and hogfry and everything else that is great about Alton’s …THE BEST DIVE CENTER IN CENTRAL AMERICA!!!…but not so much thanks for the rain………guess you are still stuck with me for awhile…..by the way where can I get my laundry done?

To Carrie….you are and will always be the Best!!!!!

Oh in case you were wondering whether I have taken another tuktuk the answer is taadaaaaaaah…”no”…..”walk don’t tuk” is what I was taught unless of course you ate too many ‘happy cookies’ in that event you should roll your hammock down the tropicville road.

May the Cosmic Whale Shark Smile Upon You…..Till the next Utilian High Times…I mean High Tide….

Mister Blue Sky

ps. the “out of air” hand signal on land here on Utila definitely means out of “_ _ _ _” not sure I should give out that answer….yet….STAY TUNED….
